Redford Abused her power, CBC misses the point.

"Was it SEXISM?" asks the CBC.   How lame.  

Go to Google right now, and you'll find many descriptions of her spendthrift sense of entitlement. News story after news story. Predictably, the CBC (Civil-servant's Broadcasting Corp) has missed the story and is trying to create the narrative that it was a bias against her gender that got her turfed.

I learned long ago that it's a common flaw of human nature to assume your hangups are shared by everyone else.  This then is an interesting insight into the cultural mindset of the CBCers.  Only man-haters will buy that bit of fiction. That's a bit of absurdity that's right up there with the Obama apologists in the U.S. who, after two terms watching him develop the worst Presidential track record in history, continue to assert that anyone who's not an Obama supporter is a racist.

Did people not like her?  Sure. I believe many people who tried to vote conservative and ended up electing Alison Redford to power were very disappointed with their pig in a poke.

But from day one she described herself as a 'progressive' and took pains to refer to her party as the PROGRESSIVE conservative Party (her emphasis). At the time I suggested that she was one of those political lefties who figured the only way to get elected to power in conservative Alberta was to pretend you were a conservative. Conservative voters have only themselves to blame.

Next time PAY ATTENTION.

Canada's Green Party sides with the Haters

Paul Estrin has learned that the Green Party, despite a claim of neutrality, has no tolerance for party officials who express contempt for Gaza's Hamas leadership, or support for Israel's right to defend itself when attacked.  Estrin, who last week was the President of Canada's Green Party, last month posted a 2,200 word blog entry on the party website on 'why Gaza makes me sad.'  He made a point of condemning the Hamas leadership for hiding in shelters while encouraging it's civilian population to remain in place and suffer casualties from Israeli attacks on rocket launch sites in civilian areas.

The Party received numerous complaints from party members, many of whom threatened to withdraw their memberships and financial support.  Leader Elizabeth May was quick to distance herself from Estrin.

Estrin has resigned his position as Green Part President. The party says Estrin's resignation has no connection to his blog post.  And if you believe that, I have a Green Party Memberhip application form for you to fill in.  They like credulous fools over there.

My own personal position on the Green Party is that it's made up of well-meaning, credulous fools whose thinking processes must be mostly of the 'wishful' sort. I shouldn't be surprised that it's supporters were so largely swayed by the overwhelmingly anti-Israeli news coverage in Canada.

NBC'S Chris Matthews FIRED for BIGOTRY

NBC'S Chris Matthews needs to be 'FIRED'. Hosting last night's NBC coverage of the GOP convention, the self-confessed Obama-fanboi noted that since the candidates, Romney, Gingrich and Santorum were "two Roman Catholics and a Mormon" that delegates would be forced to pick one of three "CULTISTS".   Twenty-five percent of Americans are Catholic, and another 4.6 percent Mormon, and Matthews dismisses them all as "CULTISTS".  That's nearly a third of the country folks.

Does that offend you? It offended me.

Especially because the Media Party wouldn't have allowed him to say anything disparaging about their religious backgrounds had the candidates been Wiccan, Hindu, or MUSLIM.

A conservative in an argument with a liberal

A conservative in an argument with a liberal is almost always at a disadvantage.The conservative has to make sense. It's self-imposed.

While this may not be a law of nature it accurately  reflects my personal experience.

The liberals I've encountered don't labor under the same burden. They've already had their minds made up for them, usually by the likes of John Stewart, Rick Mercer, Bill Maher, or a number of other comedians posing as  journalists and commentators for the midstream media.  Their followers usually can't assemble any argument more coherent than "it's the free market's fault" or "It's the conservative's fault and (ENTER CONSERVATIVE POLITICIAN NAME HERE) is a moron."

I've been thinking about this subject because it has just happened to me again.

It was inadvertent, like most initial steps into minefields often are. A visit with a childhood friend and his family was marred by a brief foray into politics and economics.  My friend's wife was flipping channels in the TV room. She stopped on a channel where Bill Maher was speaking, pretending to be funny.

 "What do you want to watch?" she asked.
I answered that she could watch what she wanted, but that I didn't think Bill Maher was funny any more.  Her reply was that, although she didn't really like Bill Maher either, she loved John Stewart and by the way, the Republicans are assholes.


Well, they certainly have their share. But how did get that non sequitur get into her stream of thought? Is it an indication of how conditioned by the midsteam media's constant stream of derision and ridicule towards conservatives their mass audience is, that a regular John Steward viewer could not tell me she really liked John Stewart without reflexively throwing in a dig at the Republicans.

 I then compounded my error by asking, "Why would you say that?"

She didn't have any facts other than her "Assertions." Her answers boiled down to "You're wrong." or "John Stewart says..."  She was determined in her belief that she was right though, and that my facts were irrelevant. It wasn't until we could find a public figure or institution we could both agree was "bad" that she felt she had "Won" and we could get back to our socializing.

U.N. No Place for Canada

It's past time for Canada to withdraw from the Corrupt Dictators Club that the United Nations has become. The latest Gong Show event was Navi Pillay, the U.N.'s "High Commissioner (now THERE's a Banana-dictatorship style title) for human rights" clumping Canada in with a host of third world shitholes because of Quebec's Bill 78, an attempt to curb the Violent and anarchistic riots by that province's spoiled and undeserving brats. It's a law passed by a democratically elected government, and is being challenged in the courts by the anarchists, (isn't that ironic?) In Syria they are shooting protestors in the streets, but apparently Canada has 'crossed the line' by making it illegal to wear a mask while rioting.

Smells like bullshit. Someone, (Navi Pillay and the U.N.) is getting paid way too much money for the value we're getting for our taxes.

This is not a kneejerk nationalistic rant in response to a criticism of my country. I mean, fire away. I support freedom of speech for anyone who would not deny me my freedom of speech.  And that's the crux. These repeated U.N. criticisms are from an organization that harbors and legitimizes our world's worst rights-abusers while demanding that we not only bend to their so-called standards, but pay the tab too. I've said it before and I'll say it again. ...and again.

Time for us to leave this party.

NDP Leader Scapegoats Prosperity

Only someone who believes in the backwards economics of socialism could feel threatened by another's economic prosperity.

It reminds me of the opening chapters of Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged." It's been years since I read it, but as I recall, it began when a socialistic government forces it's nation's few healthy profitable transportation companies to hand over their profits to a bunch of unhealthy but politically connected transportation companies.

Unsurprisingly, that's the position adopted by newly minted Federal NDP leader Thomas Mulcair towards the oilpatch-fueled economic prosperity in Alberta and, lately, of Saskatchewan.  Speaking last week to CBC Mulcair likened our Energy Sector to a disease, and blamed it for the decline of central Canada's manufacturing sector.

This is Socialism 101. Obviously if you are successful, you must be cheating someone, somewhere, and it's the State's job to redistribute your wealth to the less successful. If you, dear reader, believe this, you're as misinformed as ol' Thomas.

University of Calgary economist, Professor Frank Atkins, says Mulcair would FAIL economics 101 with the stuff he's saying.

Instead of blaming Western Prosperity and wishing for Trudeau's 75 cent dollar so that inefficient Canadian Manufacturers could compete on the global market, Mulcair should be encouraging them to become more efficient, more competitive.

I'm worried that people who believe Mulcair's nationally divisive line of crap will one day grant him the power, through the polls, to control the Canadian Economy and ruin it the way socialists ruined the economies of the European Union... or California... or Saskatchewan.

Police Bureaucrat Tells Conservative Gov't to F*ck Off

Isn't it funny how the Liberal's Long-gun Registry cost taxpayers like you and me close to two billion dollars, but now the government bureaucrats are running an illegal shadow registry for FREE?

Ontario's Chief Firearms Officer has just thumbed his nose at the Federal Government, and defied Public Safety Minister Vic Toews order yesterday to stop illegally intimidating retailers and illegally collecting information about long-gun purchases.

Without going into conspiracy theories, it's quite obvious from watching news stories about people who were victimized by crime that it's a part of Canadian Police Culture to reflexively act against anyone who attempts to defend themselves. Victims of crime are often charged by Canadian Police with assault and worse when they act in their own defense against their attackers.  They also seem to be especially interested in bringing the entire weight of the State down on any Canadian who responds with violence against against a criminal when the criminal wasn't violent first.

The Criminal Code allows self defense, but our Police don't. This defiance of Parliament regarding a shadow gun registry is logical extension of the same mindset.

A Registry Model that Works

Jamie Hall of the Edmonton Journal wrote a few months back a story about a new NATIONAL BICYCLE REGISTRY. Internet based, it can be accessed anywhere in Canada.and is available in both Official Languages.

With little or no advertising, it had accumulated some 4000 registrations. The cost is entirely borne by user-registrations of $25 per bicycle. That means so far, it's grossed about a hundred thousand dollars for the three Richmond Hill sisters who started the registry three years ago.

With their own resources, these sisters have done something that the Federal Liberals and their gun-hating ilk have been unable to achieve with the force of law, a billion of our tax dollars, and thousands of fat and sleek well-paid civil servants: A workable, national registry. If the government were to create one it could cost... billions?

This seems like a good argument for firing the civil service and privatizing much of the federal government. Using the model developed by Kate, Jane and Trish Renwick, the government could hire them for something between 175 million dollars. (that's assuming an estimated 7 million gun guns at $25 per firearm). (source: Justice Minister Allan Rock, Standing committee on Justice and Legal Affairs, April 24,1995) For that kind of money I'd run the damn thing. Just pay me once, I'd be good for twenty years... that is, if I supported the concept of gun control in general. I don't.

 No one was happier than me when Prime Minister Stephen Harper's Conservative government announced it was scrapping the registry.  Just that phrase invoked images of empty offices and file cabinets, laid off civil servants, and a blow against Big Government.

Yet like anything else that involves politics, the reality has proven to be somewhat disappointing.  Even though the Parliament has issued orders for the destruction of the records, Powerful Bureaucrats like Canada's Chief Firearms Officers are disobeying the elected government by interpreting the orders to destroy ALL the Registry data in as narrow a set of definitions as possible.  The RCMP in Ontario and Alberta are still intimidating retailers into providing them with their records of  customer sales.

The answer is clear. Pink slips for every civil servant involved in this revolt, and then burn the buildings to the ground... or at least convert the buildings into low-rent housing.

Canadian Gun control has failed it's avowed goal of preventing criminals from using guns in criminal acts. Hand guns, the weapon of choice in most gun crimes, have been registered and restricted in Canada since the 1930s. All gun control does is inconvenience the law abiding, and through discouragement encourage disarmament of the general population.

Gun control in Canada, as practiced for the last decade, implies eventual disarmament of the population through confiscation.  Canada abandoned nearly a thousand years of property rights (which we inherited from English Common Law) when Liberal Prime Minister and former communist party member Pierre Trudeau foisted the Charter of Rights and Freedoms upon us in 1982. A flawed Charter that deliberately denied Canadians the ancient right to own their own property.

That's right dear reader. In Canada, a man's home is NOT his castle. Instead of protecting your right to security of property, our constitution enshrines (by omission) the State's right to rip you off. Legalized looting, I think, was what Ayn Rand called it.  Until now,it seems the courts and legislatures of the land still sort of respect common law property rights, but there is no constitutional bar to prevent the state from passing confiscatory legislation.

The way in which the Federal Liberal Government set up their billion-dollar gun registry in the early 1990s is in part to blame for the poor participation levels it's experienced. Provisions of the legislation that created the firearms registry allow the police to enter any dwelling they suspect may harbor unregistered firearms, Without a warrant or even probable cause. The police may also steal- I mean, confiscate, without compensation, any citizen's firearm. On top of it all, in spite of an absolutely ridiculous overuse of tax-money, (estimated to reach a billion dollars - holy shit!) the law-abiding had to PAY MONEY to obey the law when they registered their guns.

I never met a tax-payer yet, who thought they hadn't already paid enough money to the government.

The only way guns can cause crime is if owning one were a crime. It's PEOPLE who cause crimes. If we went back to what I suggested earlier, a simple registration of PEOPLE with guns, should be enough already. The government already had that in the 1980s, with the old Firearms Acquisition certificate. 

I don't give a rats ass if the government knows If I'm a gun owner or not. Most gun owners probably feel the same way.

I have friends who are police officers. When Police respond to that most tense of situations, a domestic disturbance, there's no qualitative difference between knowing the occupants have a long-barrel firearm, or just that they have a permit to own firearms.

And if Public Safety Minister Vic Toews is reading this, Oh yeah, I'm serious about running it for you. You fix the law and put up the cash and it's a done deal. No union contracts. No pension liabilities. Just me, your 175 million dollars, and whoever I hire to set up and run the thing for me.

The Pope Says "Communism Doesn't Work..."

Pope Benedict XVI was on his way for a planned trip to Cuba and Mexico today.  The full sentence was in fact, "Communism doesn't work in Cuba."  But history has already shown it hasn't worked anywhere.

Here's the quote from Reuters:

Speaking on the plane taking him from Rome for a trip to Mexico and Cuba, the pope told reporters: "Today it is evident that Marxist ideology in the way it was conceived no longer corresponds to reality."  "In this way we can no longer respond and build a society. New models must be found with patience and in a constructive way."

He's not the first head of the Catholic Church to speak out against communism, just the latest. 
 

I hope this serves as yet another poke in the eye for all those so-called "Social Justice Catholics" who repeatedly vote for the Pro-abortion Socialist-leaning parties in our elections in the name of the "Poor"..

A Four-Year scholarship program for the children of Dead Soldiers has gained the support of colleges and Universities across Canada except at the University of Regina. Sixteen Professors who enjoy life on the public tit, who are allowed the freedom to teach whatever anti-west swill they please because of the freedoms earned by our military, have signed a letter protesting the University's decision to honor the scholarship because they feel it glorifies militarism.

What a bunch of sorry short-sighted out-of-touch ivory-tower fucks.

I wonder how long they'd last if they were trying to teach their pie-in-the-sky worldview under a Taliban regime?

I didn't think the Nobel Prize committee could cheapen their awards any more than they did after giving it to Al Gore for making a so-called documentary whose most accurate fact was that the earth has a climate.

That was until this past week when they gave the Peace Prize to Barrack Obama for all his accomplishments.

What accomplishments? The deadline for submitting entries was only one week after he assumed office. Obama doesn't even qualify (hmmm, again?) for the Peace Prize according to the criteria the applicants are supposed to meet. Not that following neither the spirit nor the letter of the law has been a big concern for Obama's supporters but geeze whiz, this just looks stupid.

With regards to the Peace Prize, and according to Alfred Nobel's will, the Peace Prize was for:

“

during the preceding year [...] shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.[1]

”

The blogger Spink, and his blogs, "spink about it" and "101 people who are messing up Canada" are now missing in action. Known for his right-of-centre viewpoint (can you say, "common-sense point of view?") his material is worth reading, if only to counter the CBC-promoted myth that there is no legitimate every-man Canadian viewpoint on the right side of the political spectrum too.

Spink's 101 people list and the reason they're listed should be read by every Junior-High social studies student in the country.

A quick google search and I find only a post on the Daily Gleaner from april 21st, 2009,

A Fake Crisis

Came across this gem of information after SondraK pointed the way:

The Obamunists are claiming that there's 12 or 24 or even 40 million Americans who desperately need socialized medical coverage. They're using these numbers to justify the creation of what will surely be the latest (if not the biggest) real life exercise that proves socialism doesn't work.

But While channel surfing this week, I heard Glen Beck, give a much more realistic breakdown of the actual number of un-covered Amercians. He also pointed out that if Obama really wanted to get them coverage it would be cheaper to simply buy them coverage than to set up a nationalized government health care system [complete with the requisite perpetually self-bloating civil service bureaucracy to run it, like Canada has.] (my words)

Here's the breakdown, according to Karl Rove in today's Wall Street Journal:




So, buying them coverage (5 million uncovered Americans) at say, $100 to $500 per month each, works out to between six and thirty billion a year. Damn.

That's gotta be cheaper than building a whole new Health Care bureaucracy complete with waiting lists and all the other weaknesses of rationed health care.

Ted is dead

Ted is dead. I couldn't write anything about it until now, as I was already sick to death of the oh-so-predictable outpouring of flattery from the media about what such a loss this is to the United States and to blah blah blah blah...

I've already written some less than nice things in the past about this apostate Catholic, unwanted member of the Knights of Columbus, and of course, much-too-long serving Democratic U.S. senator for Massachusetts. I didn't want to be too negative but this thought, however, has been with me all day:

because he (Ted) had championed the legality of

So I don't want to slam him any more than I already have, he's not having too good a time right now as it is...

Like his better brothers, I'm chosing to remember this Kennedy as he was when he was younger, and still full of promise. Before he proved himself a hypocrite he did publicly take a pro-life, pro-family stance. I particularly liked this 1971 letter, in which he responded to a pro-abortionist:

“While the deep concern of a woman bearing an unwanted child merits consideration and sympathy, it is my personal feeling that the legalization of abortion on demand is not in accordance with the value which our civilization places on human life. Wanted or unwanted, I believe that human life, even at its earliest stages, has certain rights which must be recognized — the right to be born, the right to love, the right to grow old.

On the question of the individual’s freedom of choice there are easily available birth control methods and information which women may employ to prevent or postpone pregnancy. But once life has begun, no matter at what stage of growth, it is my belief that termination should not be decided merely by desire.

I share the confidence of those who feel that America is willing to care for its unwanted as well as wanted children, protecting particularly those who cannot protect themselves. i also share the opinions of those who do not accept abortion as a response to our society’s problems — an inadequate welfare system, unsatisfactory job training programs, and insufficient financial support for all its citizens.

When history looks back to this era it should recognize this generation as one which cared about human beings enough to halt the practice of war, to provide a decent living for every family, and to fulfill its responsibility to its children from the very moment of conception.

101 People Screwing up Canada

Kudos to SPINK for creating the list, "101 People who are Screwing up Canada, and 10 who aren't."

Like Spink, I had read Bernard Goldberg's "100 people who are Screwing up America," picking it up on sale for $2 or $4 after Chapters/Indigo dumped it's copies into the discount bins (probably for not being Anti-American enough -it didn't quite fit in with the other books on the 'Anti-American Table' that usually has a prominent place in my local Chapters). I found the Goldberg book hugely entertaining. I'm really pleased Spink was able to compile his own list, and amply justify his choices, without turning it into one of those lame, 'Canadian-Version' sort of things we wince at and have come to expect from the CBC and the rest of the 'government-sponsored Canadian-Culture industry.

Unlike Spink, I didn't think to make a Canadian list. It was a good idea, that was well executed and worth your time to read.

What should the Government do?

OK, today the federal government admitted it’s a recession. So now what?

Over lunch today my friend Richard wanted to talk about what the government should be doing to fight off the worst effects of the newly acknowledged recession in Canada

I jokingly told him that while the “American Way” now seems to be a tendency to sue, the quintessential ‘Canadian Way,’ now seems to be a kneejerk reaction that “the government needs to do something.”

Governments can only act with money extorted from the economies that support them; any and all government actions bear a cost to their supporting economies. This is not only the direct monetary price, but also the wider de-energizing effect on everyone else who must continue to function in the economy that has been stripped of those dollars. Since I became a taxpayer I’ve had a selfish interest in curbing government spending. You and I bear the cost EVERY time an elected lawmaker feels the need to justify his or her existence to the electorate by the questionable accomplishment of passing some new law or regulation. Each time this happens I am quite personally offended and you should be too.

This ‘Canadian way’ has given us bloated government ministries that consume ridiculous portions of the funds they’ve been entrusted to administer. I give you as an example the fact that size and cost of the civilian civil service that supports the Canadian Armed Forces rivals the size and cost of the military itself. Our military infrastructure is nearly half a century obsolete, our Navy is virtually nonexistent, and our Jet fighters thirty years old. Or how about Indian and Northern Affairs (or whatever the hell Politically Correct designation it’s called by this year) which has a budget that is nearly the equal to Canada’s military? My parents have chosen to live in a ‘First Nations’ community and I’ve seen the squalor in which many people there must live. Yet the department’s salaries, pensions, and other benefits are the envy of the private sector. A third example is the relatively new bureaucracy which was created to consum- I mean, administer the GST. Yes, it does in fact consume a ridiculously large portion of the tax that it administers.

One major factor that has saved the North American nations from collapsing under suffocating levels of taxation to support their growing welfare states is the lucky geographical accident that blessed both Canada and the United States with unbelievably abundant natural wealth. Naturally our society’s various Green organizations, (themselves philosophically huge supporters of government intervention and regulation) have been perversely acting against their own self-interest by working to bar access to those natural resources for most of the last 40 years.

I've said all this to point out that I fear the cost of Government action. It's a stretch for me to be willing to consider it, so that's why I feel odd directing attention at something Financial Post editor Diane Francis wrote today.

Diane Francis thinks she knows what the government should be doing, and I'd suggest that her column in today's Financial Post is worth a look.

Today I heard her in a radio interview and to my surprise, this fiscally conservative writer was advocating massive public/private partnerships to re-finance the stalled half-dozen or so refinery projects in the Alberta Industrial Heartland near Edmonton. She also wanted to include all the recently suspended new Oilsands projects in Northern Alberta. The suspension of these projects, which would have created billions of dollars of new wealth for the economy, was forced by the nearly worldwide credit drought kicked off of course, by Frannie Mae & Freddy Mac-enabled Subprime Mortgage debacle. This is the time, she said, for the Prime Minister to act.

I’ve been reading Diane’s columns on and off ever since 1990, when I had to suffer through a two-year involuntary subscription to McLeans magazine, (no- don’t ask). She’s about as good an example of common-sense, fiscal conservative thought that Eastern Canada can provide, and I think her idea is worth consideration. It certainly seems better than NDP leader Jack Layton’s vague plan to engage in a huge nation-wide Rooseveltesque road and bridges make-work program and the no-doubt additional new bureaucracy to support it.

The PM speaks.

Prime Minister Harper addressed the nation this evening, calling the hopeful and oh-so-socialist Lib/NDP/Bloc troika "undemocratic" for their attempt to circumvent the last election and steal power. He also listed out most of the measures the government is taking to stimulate the economy, throwing back into the opposition's faces their claims that the government was 'doing nothing.'


I also find it VERY interesting that despite two days of upward movement on the American Stock exchanges Canada's TSX has continued to drop, more on Tuesday than in any single day since black Monday, in October of 1987.
